O.M. Hansen lives in Oregon, where she teaches art in a rural school district near the coast. Her days are often filled with paint-covered tables, colorful student projects, and the kind of creative moments that remind children and adults that imagination can turn ordinary things into something memorable.
Years ago, when her sons were just three and five years old, Hansen sat down to write a story for them. Not for a classroom. Not for a bookstore shelf. Just for her children.
She wanted something that would nurture their growing love of reading while introducing colors, numbers, baking, and problem-solving along the way.
The result became Palila Pineapple’s Day.
The story draws inspiration from Oahu, student artwork collected over the years, and the small family moments that often become the memories children carry longest. At its heart is a biscuit recipe with its own history. Hansen’s friend, Kat, baked the original version for her wedding, a recipe that eventually found its way into the pages of this book.

Children follow Palila’s thoughtful mission to do something special for a neighbor, showing how small acts of kindness can brighten someone’s day.

Colors, counting, problem-solving, and sequencing are naturally woven into the story, making learning feel effortless and fun.

From Green Street to Oliana Market, the story introduces young readers to the value of helping others and being part of a caring community.

The adventure continues beyond the final page with a genuine biscuit recipe family can make together at home.

At first glance, Palila Pineapple’s day seems simple. A shopping list. A baking project. A visit is planned with a neighbor. But as the day unfolds, unexpected challenges begin to appear. A few forgotten items turn a routine trip into an adventure filled with colorful discoveries, surprising moments, and important decisions. Along the way, young readers will encounter friendly faces, familiar experiences, and gentle lessons that feel natural rather than taught.
Set in a warm and welcoming community, Palila Pineapple’s Day invites children to follow clues, notice details, and wonder what might happen next. The story weaves together counting, colors, kindness, and problem-solving in a way that keeps young readers engaged while encouraging curiosity.
And just when the adventure seems complete, there’s one more surprise waiting beyond the final page: a real recipe inspired by the story itself, ready to be shared in kitchens and around family tables. Some books are meant to be read once. This is the kind of thing children often ask to hear again before bedtime.

Collect flour, rosemary, white cheddar cheese, buttermilk, and the remaining ingredients needed for Palila’s famous biscuits.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, rosemary, and shredded cheddar in a large bowl.

Whisk cooled, melted butter into the buttermilk and chill briefly before combining with the dry ingredients.

Drop generous spoonfuls of dough onto a greased baking sheet and bake until beautifully golden.

Serve warm with raspberry jam and a favorite cup of tea, just as Palila prepared for Ms. Plum.
A gentle story, memorable characters, and a recipe that brings everyone into the kitchen.
